How to stay sane during Covid-19?

1) Stay Connected
Humans are wired through years of evolution to be social creatures and the current lockdown/circuit break measures are taking a toll on everyone’s mental health.
Keep in touch with your family and friends through video calls, phone calls and social media. There are multiple options out there today, so make use of them. I myself have been doing so via Whatsapp calls, Zoom and WebEx.
2) Stay Active
On 21 April 2020, the Singapore government extended the Circuit Breaker till 1 June 2020 , announced tighter measures and we can now only exercise alone or do so in our immediate neighbourhood. I am sure that such measures are affecting everyone globally but there are still some indoor options like Yoga and Pilates.
For me, I have been using my 9kg son as weighs for squats, lunges and sit-ups. I guess some form of exercise is better than none? Any form of exercise is good for our body and mind after all.
3) Eat Healthily
One upside of the circuit breaker/lockdown is that more people have started to cook more at home, and in doing so, eating a more balanced meal.
During my younger days, I was working part-time at a restaurant called N.Y.D.C. And just like how everything happens for a reason, I guess being in the kitchen then came to good use now as I dig out the recipes that I learnt.
4) Get Creative
Relieve stress and maintain your mental wellbeing by having a creative outlet like writing, drawing, dancing or listening to your favourite music. Or just ATTEMPT to have a creative outlet like what I am currently doing; writing while listening to my favourite music.
5) Do The Things That You Have Always Wanted To
I have always wanted to try and write something but have always put it off. Now is the best time to do the things that you have wanted to, but never got a chance to do so or was afraid of doing. Write an article, learn a new skill, and get out of your comfort zone. Because if not now, then when?
Simple joys of going to our favourite restaurants to eat, seeing our loved ones, going to the beach or travelling are things that will be on hold for a while now. We have come to realise that people like our healthcare workers, cleaners, delivery men, and teachers are vital to our community but are yet so underpaid and underappreciated.
When the pace of life slows down, we realise that there are so many people and things that we have all taken for granted.
Stay home and be safe. Stay sane by staying active, eating well and staying positive. Because even in the darkest and longest nights, there still can be something to look forward to, like the aurora borealis.
We are all in this together. For now, let’s continue to be connected virtually.
